In 1923 a newly formed Birch Carroll and Coyle consortium embarked upon unprecedented plans to construct picture palaces throughout regional Queensland. Its aim was to provide theatre-goers with pleasant and comfortable venues for both live performances and film. While the reputation of the Birch Carroll and Coyle Company is now established Australia-wide, its vision of modern picture palaces for regional Queensland had a long gestation period which has received little critical attention.
