There are bound to be those for whom the recent sculpture of Charles Simonds is disturbing, even irksome. Simonds was once appealingly picaresque, carrying his bag of damp clay and tiny bricks around the globe and using them to construct the abandoned landscapes and dwellings of an imaginary civilization of little people. These habitations were built first on his own body, in 1970, and over the succeeding decade appeared on window ledges and building edges from New York to Shanghai [see A.i.A., May-June '75, July-Aug.
