Vietnamese artists have been exploring more personal visions since 1987, when restrictions were lifted on artistic expression. Many artists in the north are influenced by modernist painter Nguyen Tu Ngheim, while artists in the south embrace a more internationalist style.

Vietnamese painters won the war: they persisted with their work despite Communist Party and government harassment, reeducation, ideological straitjackets and malign neglect. Now can they win the peace?
