Aug. 31--Beaufort property owners who want to tear down large, old trees face an uphill battle. Unless the property owner is the federal government.
Federal property, like Beaufort National Cemetery, is not under Beaufort's jurisdiction, and the city is powerless to stop the Department of Veterans Affairs from tearing down "grand" trees -- those wider than 24 inches at the tree's 54-inch height mark -- on the cemetery grounds.
