ABSTRACT: For Vigny, fire serves as a vehicle of destruction and transformation. He destroys hackneyed romantic approaches to love and the divine and reinvigorates the relationship between the world and the poetic act. Moreover, in Vigny there is a shift in the representation of fire, from the amorous or divine to the technological, a measure that reflects the imaginative reconfiguring of poetic modernity.
