Students will soon need to step up on the scale before they can go to school.

A new state law mandates schools collect students' body mass index - a ratio of height to weight, often used to determine obesity - along with physical exams that have long been a required part of attending school.

The new law kicks in next year, but three Liverpool schools plan to participate in the pilot program this year to test out the practice.
