This month marks the 276th anniversary of the beginning of the last great push of French exploration into the northernmost regions of today's Minnesota.

In 1726, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de La Verendrye, a native French-Canadian (New France at that time), was working as a fur trader at Lake Nipigon, just north of Lake Superior in Ontario.

The Indians with whom he traded told him of a great river that led west. That information, and a crude map drawn on birch bark, induced him to press the French governor to fund exploration.
