Aug. 27--When Thomas Weber puts his first placement kick at Arizona State in flight, the distance the ball travels to reach the uprights will be the final leg of a long, sometimes arduous road.

A journey that began in high school -- and was nearly derailed by a broken leg -- took Weber to the Big Ten, to kicking camps and clinics and finally to Tempe, to walk on and wait a year as a redshirt, then survive a surprise camp battle to win the starting job.
