Aug. 26--In 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president for a fourth term, "Casablanca" won an Oscar for best motion picture and Chattanooga resident Mary Ruth Clinton turned 20 and joined the Women's Army Corps.

"They were urging women to join so they could free men for various war jobs," said Mrs. Clinton, now 83. "I felt like I was doing something that was helping to win the war and get our guys home quicker."

Women's Army Corps members such as Mrs. Clinton will gather this week in Chattanooga for the 61st ...
