Aug. 24--The Mercer Island School Board on Thursday unanimously approved a plan for the Boys & Girls Club to build a controversial new facility on the north end of the Mercer Island High School campus.

The three-story, 50,000-square-foot club building, called PEAK, is to be built on leased school-district property designated surplus. It would replace the current West Mercer Street facility, which was built in 1915.

Some residents have criticized plans for the $16.2 million facility since they were first announced in 2005. Critics called it out of scale ...
