Aug. 23--U.S. farm officials will require all almonds shipped domestically be pasteurized -- treated to kill unwanted pathogens -- by Sept. 1 despite an industry request that the rule be delayed six months.
"The decision to move forward with the pasteurization rule on Sept. 1, 2007, was based primarily on concern for public health," said Jimmie Turner, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in an e-mail.
