Three quarries in Northern Illinois yielded microcrystals composed of marcasite, pyrite, calcite, chalcopyrite, dolomite and goethite. The pyrite-marcasite integrowths has mostly bar- and chain-like morphologies. From studies of the morphologies, researchers hypothesized that the marcasite crystals were first formed in an elongated shaped followed by succeeding generations of marcasite and pyrite growth.
Excellent microcrystals of pyrite and marcasite are found in vugs in Ordovician limestone at several quarries in northern Illinois. The crystals include pyrite "bars" and marcasite blades ...
