MENANDS - When Peter Hess bought Albany Steel in 1985, he had only a vague notion about the history of his company's sprawling neighbor, Albany Rural Cemetery.

"I knew a U.S. president was buried there, but I didn't know which one," Hess recalled.

He holds degrees in engineering and accounting. He was working long hours trying to revive a declining business that sells specialty steel and machining services from a Broadway warehouse with an inventory of 20 million pounds of steel bar.
