Cases of meningococcal diseases more than doubled in Oregon from 2.2 per 100,000 in 1992 to 4.6 per 100,000 in 1994. Of the 115 cases in 1994 with a known serogroup, 70 were sergroup B. Of these cases 49% occured in women and 10% were fatal. Serogroup B cases were found in the 17 Oregon counties that have 83% of the state's population. Fifty-six per cent involved multilocus enzyme electrophoresis, and 86% were linked with enzyme type-5 complex strains.
