It was a good time to catch up to Billy Beane, though you wouldn't have predicted any such thing based on the standings or the A's nearly unrecognizable and unfathomable lineup Saturday.

Beane was stuck in traffic before the A's-Kansas City game, so he called from his cell phone while I sat and scribbled in the A's dugout, which gave the conversation an airy, philosophical feel.

And that made it a very good time to catch up to the general manager/part-owner.
