African Americans have been a part of the White House staff, from the slaves of the early presidents to the domestic staff present after the Civil War. The White House was modeled after a huge plantation home, and therefore required a sizable staff to manage it.

Thomas Jefferson Randolph, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and the first child ever born in the White House, fittingly bore the family names of two of Virginia's leading Revolutionary figures.
