He paints in a centuries-old medium that's shrouded in mystery but Ceri Auckland Davies has a thoroughly modern way with his brushes, as his latest exhibition demonstrates. Jenny White meets the artist

BY choosing to paint in egg tempera, Ceri Auckland Davies is one of a small number of artists keeping alive an ancient tradition.

Tempera dates back beyond ancient Greece and Rome and was widely used by Renaissance artists such as Piero Della Francesca.
