Murray and Hernstein wrongly conclude in 'The Bell Curve,' that the earning gap between blacks and whites is due to differences in intelligence as measured by IQ tests. It has not been proved that IQ tests measure intelligence, and the authors ignore the impact of discrimination altogether.

The publication of The Bell Curve by Charles Murray and Richard Hernstein, besides igniting the question of racial inferiority, sparks renewed interest in another old question: Why is there an enduring black-white earnings gap?
