Aug. 16--The Boy Scout motto is "Be prepared." This means be prepared for anything. This simple but elusive philosophy is a good practice for all of us, especially now. Tropical Storm Erin is a threat to our area, and we should do the necessary things in case the storm worsens. In other words, be prepared for the worst.

Typically, most of us wait until the last minute to see if we will really -- really -- get the worst of the storm. But this modus operandi is not a good way to be prepared. Waiting to see if a storm will be worse will leave you with your proverbial pants down.
