It is 135 years since they carried him sadly up into the hills towards his final resting place at the Cimetiere du Vieux Chateau.

In those days of course bodies were transported by horse and cart, the mourners walking behind. Perhaps a small band, with black muffled drums, led the way.

But it is surely a note of rich irony that the old graveyard where they laid to rest William Webb Ellis, founder of the game of rugby union, contains the remains of people from a multiplicity of nations: France, Italy, Germany, England and Russia.
