The new V.34 modem standard has brought 28.8-Kbps data transfer to the desktop, and modems using the technology are already available for as little as $250. The three major vendors of V.34 chip sets are Rockwell International, AT&T and Motorola. Tests show that setup can be problematic and that not all modems are completely compatible with each other. Those buying several modems for remote access should obtain them from the same manufacturer. The lowest-price modems tend to suffer from relatively poor throughput.
