This is the story told to Fra Giacomo DiGiovanni, of Pisa, who was none too bright and easily fooled.
Not long after the year 1300, Fra Giacomo returned from Jerusalem, from a pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulcher of Jesus Christ. In the bright harbor outside Amalfi, the Italian boat slowed down and did not directly proceed to the crowded port; and DiGiovanni, pale and nauseous from the trip, hung over the rail, as waves lifted and dropped the small boat.
