Fashion designer Liz Claiborne dies.(As We Go To Press)

* Liz Claiborne, founder of the fashion house that bears her name, died June 27 at the age of 78. The cause of death was abdominal cancer, a condition she had been fighting for 10 years, according to her husband, Art Ortenberg, former chairman of Liz Claiborne Inc.

Claiborne was one of the co-founders in 1976 of Liz Claiborne Inc., which became one of the most successful apparel companies in the world. When she retired in 1989, the publicly traded company had sales of $1.2 billion. Last year, sales topped $4.9 billion and the company had cosmetic and fragrance sales ...
