CUTTING-EDGE DNA research has revealed that there are five previously unknown female elephants in the Knysna forest.
There is also evidence, from dung found in the forest, that an elephant calf has been born.
This suggested that there might be hope for the survival of the famous Knysna elephants, which until now were thought to have been reduced to one remaining old female.
The research was published in the online version of the African Journal of Ecology at the weekend.
