ABSTRACT

This article traces the cultural authority of V S. Naipaul's essays and travel writing to his use of violence to represent and analyse the condition of the Global South. In this Naipaul may appear to be drawing on the works of other social scientists and theorists of decolonization /neocolonialism, but in reality he sharply veers away from these. Instead, Naipaul uses violence to promote a homogenizing and exclusivist vision of the Global South, so that it appears at once to be irreducibly distant and essentially different from what, according to him, is the core of ...
