It has been a turbulent few months. Unions, the media and MPs have rounded on the private equity sector which stands accused of, amongst other things, a lack of transparency in corporate governance, over-leveraging of debt and conflicts of interest.

In the process, we have seen the head of the industry's lobby group, the BVCA, Peter Linthwaite, being savaged at a Treasury Select Committee of MPs and subsequently resigning - having been forced to quit by members who reckoned he had failed to put up a robust defence.
