It is repeated as a truism in the literature of American art history that newspaper illustrations created by George Luks and his cohorts from Philadelphia (William Glackens, John Sloan, and Everett Shinn) formed the foundation for their developing interest in urban realist subjects and awakened their desire to be taken seriously as artists.
