In the portrait he looks handsome and regal - not the reputed "crouchback" of legend.

And yet there is something vaguely disconcerting about the famous painting of King Richard III (artist unknown and much reproduced through the centuries). The face has a certain uninviting coldness to it. And the king seems agitated, seemingly fidgeting with a ring on his finger.

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown - as William Shakespeare once put it.

Richard III had reason to feel uneasy.
