Television stand-up comedy shows offer opportunities for black people to assert their identities in a white-dominated society. They serve as a medium where blacks can express their feelings towards the issues of racism, discrimination against minorities and oppression. Black artists use a double-edged humor to convey their messages and make fun of real-life situations. However, people who understand black comedy know that it does not merely act to heighten the public's awareness on racism, but it is a form of minor discourse to display the richness of the African American language.
