Galdos's 'Misericordia' (1897) is an example of a work from the 'naturalismo espiritual' period in Spanish literature. Despite this, it exhibits unexpected humor in terms of tone, malapropisms, linguistic errors, exaggeration and historical irony. 'Misericordia' is an entertaining work that comes off as a 'tall tale' based on human-animal visual comedy. It parodies Spain's political conditions in the late 1800s, but this becomes evident only in its last chapter.
