In the 1960s, Catholics began to reinterpret the significance of Mary. At first the church led a movement away from devotion to Mary and more towards Christ. Later, feminists viewed Mary in a more human way, as a suffering woman they could identify with. Other new views of Mary and described.
Nearly a year ago, theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether was invited to deliver a paper on "Mary in Contemporary American Culture" at a conference organized by one of Rome's pontifical faculties....
