Dogs in the greater London area don't bark - or so it seems. In fact, on a two-hour jog through Hampton, just outside the English capital, recently I saw only one dog. The pooch - a fluffy, white mongrel - was on a long leash, obviously on a walkies outing - with absolutely no interest in raising a bark.

None of the scores of uniform double-storey homes I ran past boasted a dog in the yard, and, in the quiet of the evenings, there's not a doggie sound to be heard.
