Hospitals that offer better working conditions for nurses are safer for elderly intensive care unit patients. So concludes research led by the Columbia University School of Nursing.

Hospital-associated infections are the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the largest work force in U.S. hospitals, nurses are in a position to impact the safety of ICUs if systematic improvements to their working conditions can be made, say researchers.
