The New Republic is getting older. After 93 years in print, the opinion journal celebrates its 30-year anniversary with Editor-in-Chief Martin Peretz. Peretz has published the liberal magazine since 1974, but this February The New Republic was acquired by Canada's largest media company, CanWest Global Communications Corp., according to Reuters.

Long before the sale, however, two intellectuals and a high-society couple brought their collective, progressive vision to fruition in the magazine's pages.
