Most Slovaks were against the division of Czechoslovakia, and a 1994 poll in Slovakia indicates that this dissatisfaction continues. Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar has received extensive criticism, and the Catholic Church remains important in the social, but not political, life of the country.
Slovaks were never given the chance to vote on Czechoslovakia's 1993 split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The country's Protestants strongly opposed the move.
