Jean Van de Velde won't be returning to the scene of the crime this week at Carnoustie. He pulled out of a British Open qualifier last month because of a virus that has plagued him all year.
Now there is no chance to even fantasize that Van de Velde could atone for his 18th-hole disaster in 1999 and miraculously win by taking a six on the final hole. Regardless of what he shot, the Frenchman definitely would have received rousing ovations from the Scots, who still feel his pain.
