WHEN CHILDREN ARE AGGRESSIVE, they sometimes seem driven by anger and impulsivity, whereas at other times, they appear cool, deliberate, and purposeful. A theoretical distinction has been made between the two types of aggression--reactive aggression and proactive aggression (Dodge, 1991; Dodge & Coie, 1987; Vitaro & Brendgen, in press). Reactive aggression is defensive, retaliatory, and in response to real or perceived provocation. It has its roots in frustration-aggression theory (Berkowitz, 1963, 1989).
