Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, then defence minister Art Eggleton boldly proclaimed his Liberal government was committed to whatever measures were required to rid Afghanistan of al Qaeda and its state supporters, the Taliban. "We're in this campaign against terrorism all the way," he said. Less than six years later, the Liberal party is calling to pull Canadian troops out of Afghanistan by 2009, suggesting captured Taliban terrorists be brought back to Canada, and criticizing the Conservative government for "overspending on Afghanistan equipment."
