Q Why is Med Flight sometimes asked to transport people with "non-life-threatening injuries" from accidents? Who makes that call?

A Emergency medical workers at the scene have been trained to decide when a UW Med Flight helicopter is needed, said UW Hospital spokesman Tim Le Monds.

"We rely on them to make the decision in the field," he said.

A patient may be severely injured and in need of treatment as fast as possible to prevent great pain and possible worsening of his or her condition, he said.
