Jul. 4--Q: I've been discussing with a gardener friend about the plant horehound and what pretty leaves it has. The only horehound I know is candy. The dictionary says both. We want to know how the candy is made.

A: Horehound is a flowering herb that for years has been used for medicinal purposes, like cough drops. It has a menthol taste and smell. Oil and flavor from its leaves are extracted to make the horehound candy, similar to the way mint is used to make peppermint candy.
