NEW ORLEANS -- As this city braces for another hurricane season, many locals are wondering whether New Orleans will ever recover the population it lost after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

New statistics released by the Census Bureau indicate that the New Orleans metropolitan area lost about 22% of its population--nearly 300,000 people--between 2000 and 2006. That makes it the city with the biggest population decline in the United States.
