Like a patient hoping to stave off the family disease, the massive elm trees shadowing Beth Connor's tidy Bloomington rambler got their triennial dose of fungicide last week.

The crew from Rainbow Treecare dug a shallow trench around each trunk to unearth the thinner bark cover below ground. Then they strung tubing around the trunk, attached it to the tree and started shooting gallons of the diluted fungicide up the roots to the crown.
