A gifted leader of students: Founding president of math, science academy steps down.

Jun. 29--The Illinois Math and Science Academy opened on shaky ground 20 years ago, with critics claiming it was a waste of taxpayer dollars to set up an "elitist" public residential school in Aurora for gifted high school students.

Less than a year later, its founding president, Stephanie Pace Marshall, learned state funding cuts might shut the school down. She fought critics head-on, taking the entire student body to Springfield to present her case, and helped save the school.
