Though the earliest cultural group to inhabit the San Diego area is often dated around 7500 B.C., most researchers believe that the coastal region near what is now California's second-most-populous city was first inhabited by humans about 20,000 years ago. Throughout the centuries to follow, as one Native American group assimilated the next in the San Diego area, the population spread inland across the desert toward the Salton Sea, and northward towards what is now Orange County.
