The Russian nobility, like noblemen elsewhere in Europe, were not immune to the Baroque fashion for collection building. The earliest known Russian Kunstkammern belonged to Czar Ivan the Terrible (1530-1584), and later to Czar Alexis (1629-1676), father of Peter the Great, although these are not known to have contained any mineral specimens.
