Mineral collecting in the Benelux countries did not thrive as well as elsewhere, partly due to the absence of metalliferous mines and the lack of enthusiasm among the aristocracy. Nevertheless, there was interest in mineralogy, evidence of which survives. Among the prominent collectors were Charles Alexander (1712-1780), Willem Frederick (1172-1843), Albert Seba and Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778). The latter's collection is preserved today in Teyler's Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
