James Sowerby holds a special position in British mineral collecting. Not only was he an active mineral collector in his own right, but he served as a focal point for other English collectors, and as a great stimulus to mineral collecting throughout England because of his published books. His five-volume British Mineralogy (1804-1817) and his two-volume Exotic Mineralogy (1811-1817) depicted in color over 1,500 specimens from the best mineral collections in England, most of them dating from the late 18th century.
