Jun. 20--Tulare County is joining county governments across the nation seeking greater compensation to provide services on federal lands.

California counties last week received a total of $21 million from the U.S. Department of the Interior under the federal Payments in Lieu of Taxes or PILT program.

The program implements a law requiring federal payments be made to counties to help offset losses in property tax due to the nontaxable status of federal lands.
