Repression of human rights to personal integrity in the 1980s: a global analysis.

The extent of government repression of human rights in 153 countries is analyzed using the least-squares method. The results show that governmental repression is heavily influenced by democracy and participation in civil or international military conflicts. On the other hand, economic development and poplation size had little impact on repression. The results also indicate that leftist regimes are generally more inclined towards the abuse of human rghts.
