Gamete spawning and fertilization in the gymnolaemate bryozoan Membranipora membranacea.

The simultaneously hermaphroditic zooids of Membranipora membranacea colonies spawn primary oocytes and spermatozeugmata (aggregates of 32 or 64 spermatozoa) into ambient seawater. Eggs are released through the intertentacular organ (ITO) whereas spermatozeugmata are spawned through the tips of the two distomedial tentacles. Fertilized eggs undergo planktotrophic development to form long-lived cyphonautes larvae. Examination of ovarian, coelomic, and spawned oocytes for sperm nuclei, using ei...

Gamete spawning and fertilization in the gymnolaemate bryozoan Membranipora membranacea.
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction In 1966, Silen reported that external cross-fertilization occurred in two gymnolaemate bryozoan species, Electra posidoniae and E. crustulenta. This report contradicted the 100-year-old belief that internal self-fertilization is obligatory in this group of hermaphroditic invertebrates
Wispy, the Drosophila Homolog of GLD-2, Is Required During Oogenesis and Egg Activation
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Egg activation is the process that modifies mature, arrested oocytes so that embryo development can proceed. One key aspect of egg activation is the cytoplasmic polyadenylation of certain maternal mRNAs to permit or enhance their translation. wispy (wisp) maternal-effect mutations in
Effects of altering pHi and pHo on the activation of Chaetopterus eggs.
The Biological Bulletin ; Chaetopterus eggs are shed at prophase of meiosis I and undergo germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) upon contact with natural seawater (NSW). The initiating agent in NSW is unknown, but it must be a trace component because no artificial seawater formula is able to induce GVBD (1). After GVBD they
Ionophore-induced calcium waves activate unfertilized zebrafish (Danio rerio) eggs.
The Biological Bulletin ; Egg activation is accompanied by propagating [Ca.sup.2+] waves that can be induced by factors such as sperm, pricking, calcium ionophores, and injected [IP.sub.3] or cADPR (1). Such waves have been reported from a variety of deuterostomes and protostomes (2, 3). One notable omission from this
Germ-Cell Warfare in Ascidians: Sperm From One Species Can Interfere With the Fertilization of a Second Species.
The Biological Bulletin ; CHARLES C. LAMBERT Department of Biological , California State University. California Ascidians (invertebrate chordates) are very abundant in many marine subtidal areas. They often live in dense multispecies clumps; thus, interspecific competition for space may be intense. Although most
CAN ARTIFICIAL TECHNIQUES SUPPLY MORALLY NEUTRAL HUMAN EMBRYOS FOR RESEARCH? Part I. Creating Novel Categories of Human Embryos
Ethics & Medicine ; Abstract Manipulations of the molecular composition and formation of human embryos are posing vital new challenges to traditional concepts of human identity and procreation. Current trends in embryology in particular are reshaping the ethical question of how scientific research should treat

Evolutionary Expressed Sequence Tag Analysis of Drosophila Female Reproductive Tracts Identifies Genes Subjected to Positive Selection
Genetics ; ABSTRACT GENES whose products are involved in reproduction include some of the fastest-evolving genes found within the genomes of several organisms. Drosophila has long been used to study the function and evolutionary dynamics of genes thought to be involved in sperm competition and sexual
